Hey, Oscar Wilde! It’s Clobberin’ Time!

Interesting title. Thank you. I cannot take credit for it.
Not quite a writing charity or an author dinner raising money for illiteracy, but it’s so noteworthy and creative and…well, authory, that I knew I had to write a little bit about it’s existance.

“Hey, Oscar Wilde! It’s Clobberin’ Time” is a website where, as they say themselves (capslock and all):

NOW IN ITS TENTH INCARNATION SINCE BEING LAUNCHED IN 06.1998, IS AN EXTENSION OF A PERSONAL ART COLLECTION OF VARIOUS ARTISTS INTERPRETING THEIR FAVOURITE LITERARY FIGURE/AUTHOR/CHARACTER THAT HAS BEEN ACCUMULATED SINCE 03.1998.

Basically, it’s a website where illustrators and artists do up pieces involving their favorite books or authors and post them online, and the artistic styles vary widely it’s jaw-dropping, quirky and fun for any book or illustration/art enthusiast. Take a look at the variety of styles shown of in the revolving header images alone! (There’s a new one every time it refreshes.) The one above, and these two:

Chances are, if you have a favorite literary classic, someone has immortalized it on this site, or will. These are some of my favorites I’ve found. Just click on them to visit their pages on http://heyoscarwilde.com.

For the artists, I’m not sure how it works as far as getting them to post their stuff, but I know the site welcomes anyone to post their own author caricatures at their Facebook page.

And because we’re talking about author/character caricatures, I found some more on DeviantArt while I was looking for Victorian-style illustrations as research for my far-future upcoming webcomic.

The amazing artist in question is MirrorCradle (who I can credit for the beautiful “The Letter A” illustration I used in my “A is for Axhausted” entry). I don’t believe they’re featured on H.O.W.I.C.T., but they SHOULD BE! Behold:

Please, oh, please go look at the full gallery! She has more authors and characters from many books, including fairy tales, Watchmen, Harry Potter and Alice in Wonderland!

GUH, I am such a sucker for a good illustrator. I like to cartoon little characters, and always have, but I’m hardly a master. It’s so cool to see all the different interpretations of people’s favorite authors or characters in so many styles! I hope some of these artists are making money with their talents: they all certainly deserve it. Enjoy the links, guys!
