Hobbit Birthday Bash & The Scouring of the Gingerbread
Since there won’t be another Hobbit/LOTR movie this year, in lieu of their usual end of the year movie party, my in-laws held a Bilbo & Frodo birthday bash in honor of Tolkien Week and Hobbit Day! There was a cake with 111 candles creating a fiery rising heat vortex, and we dismantled the remains of the giant themed gingerbread houses, to make room for a new era of geeky parties. Featured snippet song is an acoustic version of Flight of the Conchords’ “Frodo, Don’t Wear the Ring.”

Happiness is a warm kitten | Happy Birthday, Moss!
It’s Moss’ First Birthday!!! Birthdays are always special, but after all he’s been through, this one feels particularly dear. I wrote this long-form poem, which is more like a journal entry, in October last year, right after Moss had completed recovery from his invasive gastro surgery. He’d ingested a bunch of string that perforated his stomach lining and got close to his kidneys. After a nerve-wracking night of surgery, and a thankfully successful recovery, he’d had his stitches removed and his belly was still growing back all his hair. Confessions of an Insecure Author* (Post #200!)
*I know, pretty much all you authors out there are. 😛 So, come commiserate with me. So, Labor Day weekend was a roller coaster for my writing emotions. For the first part of the weekend, we spent some time with friends at a beautiful farm house inn. I went to sleep to the sounds of thunder storms or barking farm dogs (kept there to chase off coyotes) and woke up to the misty mornings of sweet, quiet open space, punctuated by rooster calls. Angry zombie mongooses and I FINISH DRAFT 4 OF MY NOVEL!!!! YAAAAAAY!!!!!! Hoooraaaaaaaay!!!!!! Draft 4 is done and sent out to the first batch of reviewers! Hi guys. I am REALLY sorry about the insanity of this website transfer thing, but I’ve been so busy I can’t give it the time it deserves. Southern Book Festival
Despite how unprepared I was for the chillier-than-expected weather, my two friends and I descended on the festival with high spirits! I came away with a few new books, accessories, and new contacts that I hope will pan out in the future! It really reminded me of all the work that is ahead of me. Getting published is no easy thing, yet, like an ever-optimistic character from an anime cartoon (glittery eyes and all) I whisper, “I can do it! I will do it!” before the title credits roll. I’ll just have to see how the next episode pans out. Vive les livres!
