826 Valencia
Another new little posting series: The Write Stuff, *groan* where I post interesting, quick morsels of info involving the grooming of the next generation of writers, anything from awesome teachers or inspiring stories, to non-profits, to anything else I think counts.
What do you get when you cross learning to write with an abiding love for all things piratey?
Why, 826 Valencia, of course!
As one of the locations of the 826 National centers, they tutor kids in writing. Here’s a bit about 826 Valencia in their own words. From their website:
Founded in 2002 by author Dave Eggers and educator Nínive Calegari, 826 Valencia is dedicated to supporting students ages 6 to 18 with their writing skills, and to helping teachers get their students excited about the writing. Our work is based on the understanding that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success and that great leaps in learning can be made when skilled tutors work one-on-one with students.
Yarr, that be a mighty fine plan. So where does the pirate theme come in? Well…they don’t say specifically. But really, does it need an explanation? What kid doesn’t love fun and adventure? Making writing fun for kids is the best way to let them enjoy the process and actually learn something at the same time.
If you live in/are visiting San Francisco you can visit them in person, (their website has their contact info) or you can support their valiant effort by going to their website and perusing their store, chock full of piratitude!
